Cusomised Nest Boxes...

The Melbourne Wildlife Sanctuary at Latrobe University has conducted considerable research into the nesting habits of a variety of Melbourne's native birds and arboreal mammals.

The results of this research is this range of nest boxes that are customised to individual species or groups of similar species.

The nest boxes are constructed from standard plywood rather than marine plywood, that contains toxic preservatives that would poison animals gnawing on the wood.

The nest boxes have a life span of about 10 years in rain forest conditions and longer in drier habitats. You could increase the their life span by waterproofing all unpainted surfaces with beeswax.

If you want to enjoy the pleasure of wildlife around your garden then why not invite them to take up residence by installing a number of these nest boxes.

They are an ideal way to atone for the fact that many mature trees with suitable nesting hollows have likely been destroyed to make way for the houses in your neighbourhood.

Ringtail Possum
Side entrance allows safe entry into the box by the possum. The smaller entrance size and volume of the box prevents use by Brushtail Possums.

Large Parrot
This standard box is readily used by many species of parrots. Swivel mounted brackets allow the box to be attached at any angle of the branch or trunk.

Brushtail Possum
Rather than using your roof space for a home, give the possums a house of their own.

Duck
The attached spout protects the eggs from predators. When placed in a tree, Kookaburras wil also use this type of box.

Kookaburra
The attached spout protects the eggs from predators. When placed in a tree, Kookaburras wil also use this type of box.

Owl
The attached spout protects the eggs from predators. When placed in a tree, Kookaburras wil also use this type of box.

Sugar Glider/Phascogale/Antichinus
Specially designed to favour smaller animals. The small entrance stops exotic birds from occupying the box.

Pardalote/Small Parrot
Filled with sand or potting mix, this box becomes a good alternate nest to tunnels in a creek bank or road cutting.

Feather Tail Glider
Specially designed for Feathertail Gliders and Pygmy Possums. This box is very easy to install.

Micro Bat
The narrow interior space, entered from below, is ideal for small insectivorous bats.
